Design Manager – Major Civils & Infrastructure Project

Location: Derby

Salary: £60,000 – £75,000 + Competitive Benefits Package

About the Role

You will manage and coordinate the design process for allocated projects from tender and pre-construction through detailed design, construction, commissioning and handover. You are the principal design interface between the client, designers, specialist subcontractors, suppliers and the project delivery team, ensuring design information is safe, compliant, coordinated, buildable and delivered to programme and contract.

 

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the Design Management Plan, design programme, deliverables schedule and Design Responsibility Matrix
  • Manage design from tender/pre-construction through detailed design, construction, commissioning, as-built and handover
  • Define design scopes, deliverables, interfaces, review requirements and acceptance criteria for consultants, subcontractors and specialist suppliers
  • Lead multidisciplinary design coordination meetings, design reviews, buildability reviews and design risk workshops
  • Coordinate permanent works, temporary works, methodology, sequencing, logistics, procurement and specialist design interfaces
  • Identify and resolve design gaps, clashes, incomplete information and interface risks before they affect procurement or construction
  • Ensure compliance with the contract, client requirements, legislation, British Standards, Eurocodes, industry guidance and company procedures
  • Support CDM 2015 — eliminate/reduce foreseeable risks and communicate significant residual design risks
  • Manage technical queries, RFIs, design decisions, departures, concessions and changes, including programme and commercial impact
  • Monitor design progress and consultant performance; report status, risks and delays to project leadership
  • Confirm construction teams have current approved design information and support site technical issues
  • Mentor Design Coordinators and junior design management staff

 

Essential

  • Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent in civil engineering, structural engineering, construction, architecture, building services or related
  • Substantial experience managing multidisciplinary design on civil, infrastructure or construction projects
  • Experience with a principal contractor, specialist contractor or engineering consultancy in pre-construction and delivery
  • Knowledge of design assurance, technical approvals, change control, CDM 2015 and NEC or JCT
  • Experience reviewing drawings, specifications, calculations, models and permanent/temporary works interfaces
  • Relevant construction health and safety qualification or training
  • Strong technical judgement, leadership, communication and commercial awareness

 

Desirable

  • Chartered or Incorporated membership (or working towards)
  • Common data environment and BIM coordination experience
